Applegrove Nature School – “Play, Create & Take Risks

Applegrove Nature School was founded in 2023 to support our own children’s homeschooling journey and provide them with a space and time to play, be creative, take risks and learn life skills. It has since grown considerably as other families were also seeking outdoor recreational programming that is more responsive to their children’s interests and that offers a wide range of benefits with regards to children’s physical, mental and social well-being. We offer a unique approach to education, blending play, creativity, and bushcraft with a deep connection to the natural world. Guided by seven core relationships—Play, Risk, Trust, Power, Land, Story, and Learning—we nurture holistic child development through after-school, Pro D Day and holiday programs, as well as parent-toddler playgroups. In addition, we collaborate with local experts on outdoor education, work with local schools, and provide adult programming. This year we are also hosting the Forest and Nature School Practitioners Course led by the Child and Nature Alliance of Canada (CNAC).

Led by certified practitioners and teachers, we inspire curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love for nature in every child.

A creative incubator for locals, an inviting haven for visitors.

Along the placid shores of the West Kootenays’ Upper Arrow Lake, lays the rural village of Nakusp. Every week, the old Nakusp Firehall inspires, nourishes and supports the community by hosting Nakusp’s 50 Mile Year Round Market.

This market focuses on local – very local. In order to support the truly remote food producers and artisans in the area, all vendors are within a 50-mile radius of Nakusp. On offer, everything from fresh produce and apple cider, to handcrafted birdhouses and original works of art – and on market days, hot meals from the repurposed community kitchen.
