From the Village of Nakusp:
We are please to inform you that construction of the Downtown Revitalization Project is now beginning. We have been engaged in a planning process for the project which included extensive community consultation that lead to the development of the Revitalization Plan. The community’s vision for the plan was the beautification and enhancement of Nakusp’s main street by creating an attractive, convenient and pedestrian friendly downtown.
Village Council has identified funding for Phase One of the project that will have no impact on property taxes. The first phase consists of three blocks from 2nd Avenue to 5th Avenue on Broadway Street. These three blocks were chosen as they have the highest density of businesses overall. This construction of the Downtown Revitalization Project begins September 4th with an expected completion of November 30th.
Phone One construction will begin at 2nd Avenue and will progress on the north side of Broadway to 5th Avenue. Work will then move to the south side of Broadway and progress from 5th to 2nd Avenue. The project work flow is designed to mitigate the potential disruption to residents and our local businesses to as great a degree as possible. However, during the construction process there will be disruptions to parking and access.
Unfortunately, the existing trees along Broadway Street will have to be removed during construction, as they are in poor health and are causing damage to the existing sidewalks and curbs. Our new streetscape on Broadway has been designed to minimize maintenance issues and provide a pleasing tree canopy. The new specimen trees and shrub plantings will be of a size to ensure that there is an immediate aesthetic and pleasing impact for replacement of the existing trees. The new trees planted in the sidewalk areas will be in engineered soil vaults that provide a healthy root zone environment designed to eliminate damage to the new sidewalks.
We appreciate your patience during the construction and offer our apologies for any disruption.
