The Half Marathon:

Route Map/Elevation Profile: Nakusp Half Marathon with elev profile

Nakusp Half Marathon –  The Half Marathon will be a challenging single-loop course of the surrounding country and hillside of beautiful Nakusp. A combination of Road, Dirt Road and Trail will be used, however, the run is mainly road. It will have a significant elevation gain and loss, as this is typical running in the Kootenays, rarely is it flat! The route will start and finish at the Gazebo Park, include a loop up into the Wells Road area, then over to Alexander Road where it will cross the highway and use a short stretch of the old rail bed trail to connect with Brouse Loop. A significant climb up Billings Road, then around the Crescent Bay area and back into Nakusp along the highway and beautiful Boardwalk along the lake.

The 10K Challenge & 5km Fun Run/Walk

Route Map/Elevation Profile: Nakusp 5k Fun RunWalk

The 5km Fun Run/Walk is a 5km road run around Nakusp. Starting at the GAZEBO PARK in downtown Nakusp, runners will start with an out and back along 8th Ave. towards the Arena, then head west around the campground. Turn left on 10th, then right on the highway and left into the trailer park loop. Exiting the loop turn left on the highway then left after the elementary school. Then right on 2nd, cross Broadway and enter the Boardwalk for the final kilometer back to the finish.

10K Challenge – For runners stepping up their game and ready to tackle a 10K run. Two loops around the 5K route and they’ve reached their goal. Next stop, the Half Marathon!

There are public washrooms located at the Gazebo Park (start/finish line), but only bushes along the route!

Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness
Monashees, British Columbia

The 3rd Canadian HUMM will be happening in the Monashees of British Columbia. A unique 2-day motorcycle orienteering / navigation challenge, the HUMM has also been described as an off-road motorcycle scavenger hunt. There is no set course, so you make your own adventure! Winning demands strategy, teamwork, riding and navigation skills and pure fun! “The best 48 hours of my life! (apologies to my wife!)”

The Monashees are a 400-km-long range in southern BC. Known to hikers and heli-skiers for some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, the Monashees are relatively unknown as an off-road riding destination. We aim to change that! “Couldn’t believe how good the scenery was…”

Idaho Peak Ultra:

A race to the Summit of the iconic and spectacular Idaho Peak and back with 1 mile vertical elevation gain/loss.  The race takes place along some of the most enjoyable single track running trails in BC, old mining roads steeped in history, carved out along the Carpenter Creek and New Denver Canyons.  This may just be the only mountain marathon in North America which involves using a cable car to cross a creek! Spectacular views of Slocan Lake and the Valhallas await you at the summit rewarding your effort.  This route will not disappoint.

The climb out of New Denver is gentle and ‘run-able’, staying on the south side of Carpenter Creek along the old mining road of Old Sandon Road. The road deteriorates into a single track winding its way through former mining artifacts, crossing numerous creeks.  Continuing onto Alamo Wagon Road, the climb  pops out onto Queen Bess mining road, traversing the slope and then heading straight up to the north summit, where you will find some telecommunication towers. From here, climb your way up the rounded ridge to the fire lookout hut on the summit of Idaho Peak, having climbed a vertical mile from the start line.  Stop and enjoy the 360 degree views of snowy mountain peaks, pristine wilderness and the spectacular Slocan Lake 1715m below!

Get your number checked off, and start the long descent down the well defined East Ridge route to the car park P1. Descend the main road for 3km before entering a tributary trail to connect back to Queen Bess, traverse round the northern flank to the trails of H Road, Galena Trail, then a bucket crossing to cross Carpenter Creek and back along the Lower Carpenter Creek Trail to New Denver finish where food, drink and support  await you.
